Durg/Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, July 31, 2025– A young tribal woman from Narayanpur has broken her silence following the controversial detention of two Catholic nuns in Durg, calling the allegations of human trafficking and forced religious conversion “completely wrong”.
Kamleshwari, who was travelling with the nuns and two other girls to Agra to take up employment in a Catholic-run hospital, firmly stated on an interview with 'The Vistaar', that the journey was undertaken with full parental consent and of their own free will.
“We were taken into custody from the railway station on false accusations, which is completely wrong,” she said in a recorded interview. “The people there told us, ‘If you don't say what we ask of you, we will hit you and your brother and put you in jail along with the sisters.’”
She described how fear and intimidation influenced their initial statements. “While giving the statement at the station also, we were scared and shivering of what they will do to us. We were going to Agra with our parents' consent, and I was travelling there to work in a missionary hospital.”
Kamleshwari also asserted her religious identity and that of her companions. " My family has been putting our faith in Christ for years. Also, my friends who were with me that day, are faithful in Christianity. We want to prove that those accusations against the sisters are wrong and will fight to give the sisters justice.”
The incident occurred on 25 July at Durg Railway Station, where a Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) reportedly stopped the group over a platform ticket issue and alerted local activists. Members of the Bajrang Dal confronted them, leading to police involvement and subsequent accusations.
Kamleshwari’s statement stands in stark contrast to the narrative put forth by the activists and police. As calls grow louder for justice and a fair inquiry, Kamleshwari’s voice serves as a powerful reminder to the case.
