'Vision Must Shape Mission,' Asansol Clergy Told at Annual Priests' Meeting

Asansol, April 24, 2026: The Diocese of Asansol reaffirmed its pastoral priorities and future direction during its annual priests' meeting, held from April 20 to 22 at the historic Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, Bandel, in Hooghly, West Bengal.

Forty-four priests joined Archbishop Elias Frank, Apostolic Administrator of Asansol, for the three-day gathering, which focused on reviewing the diocese's pastoral journey, addressing financial challenges, and charting a renewed course for mission.

A substantial part of the meeting was devoted to evaluating the diocese's work over the past year. Reports from various diocesan commissions and apostolates offered a detailed overview of pastoral initiatives, achievements, and ongoing challenges across the local Church.

Financial stewardship emerged as a major theme. Presenting a decade-long financial review, Fr. Wilson Fernandes, the diocesan Financial Administrator, highlighted the growing challenges posed by changing FCRA regulations. He underscored the need for accountability, transparency, and prudent management of resources. Echoing this concern, Archbishop Frank stressed that all financial decisions must be guided by urgency, usefulness, and genuine pastoral need.

The highlight of the gathering was a vision-building session led by Fr. Cletus D'Souza, SDB, who challenged the clergy to embrace a forward-looking and mission-oriented approach. "Vision precedes mission," he told the priests, urging them to ensure that their ministry is rooted in a clear and compelling sense of purpose.

Drawing on the insights of futurist Frederick Polak, Fr. Cletus observed that "a significant vision precedes significant success," even when resources are limited. He further reminded the gathering: "Vision without action is merely a dream; action without vision is passing time; but vision with action can change the world."

Calling for a more participatory and people-centred Church, he encouraged priests to work with people rather than simply for them. His analysis of diocesan demographic trends from 2023 to 2025 pointed to encouraging growth and considerable missionary potential, while also highlighting the need to strengthen catechetical formation, youth ministry, and outreach in weaker parishes.

Group discussions allowed priests to engage deeply with pressing pastoral issues, including evangelisation, catechesis, comprehensive marriage preparation, and innovative approaches to parish renewal. These conversations sought to align local initiatives with the broader diocesan pastoral vision.

In his concluding address, Archbishop Frank urged the clergy to look ahead with confidence and hope. While acknowledging the lessons of the past, he reminded them that the Church's mission demands a steadfast focus on the future.

The annual meeting not only strengthened presbyterial fraternity but also renewed the clergy's shared commitment to advancing the mission of the Diocese of Asansol in an ever-changing pastoral landscape.
