Visakhapatnam, April 24, 2026: In a significant move to deepen its commitment to synodality, the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam concluded a two-day Pastoral Summit on April 23, setting in motion the process of formulating a new Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan rooted in communion, participation, and mission.
Held from April 22 to 23 under the leadership of Archbishop Udumala Bala, the summit brought together priests and religious from across the archdiocese to reflect on the vision of a synodal Church as articulated by the universal Church and the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CBCI).
Fr. Christopher Vimalraj, who served as the resource person, guided participants through the Final Document of the Synod on Synodality. His presentations explored the theological foundations of synodality while offering practical insights into how its principles could be integrated into the structures and ministries of the local Church.
The summit featured interactive sessions, group discussions, and moments of shared reflection, fostering an atmosphere of listening and collaboration. Participants examined ways in which the Archdiocese could more fully embody a culture of dialogue, co-responsibility, and missionary outreach.
A special session with the clergy proved pivotal, as discussions turned toward the need for a renewed pastoral roadmap. Drawing inspiration from the CBCI's pastoral framework, Journeying Towards a Synodal Church, Archbishop Bala and the priests unanimously resolved to begin drafting a comprehensive pastoral plan for the Archdiocese.
The process, Church leaders said, will be distinctly synodal, involving extensive consultation with lay faithful, women religious, and young people. This broad-based participation is intended to ensure that the pastoral priorities of the Archdiocese are shaped by the aspirations, challenges, and lived experiences of its people.
The summit marks an important milestone in the Archdiocese of Visakhapatnam's synodal journey, signalling its determination to become an increasingly participatory and missionary local Church. The CBCI has also pledged its continued support in accompanying the Archdiocese as it undertakes this important pastoral initiative.
