Vasai, June 16, 2026: More than 350 catechists from across the Diocese of Vasai came together at Christ the King Church, Bolinj, on June 14 for the Catechists’ Gathering 2026, a vibrant event dedicated to renewing the Church’s mission of faith formation and equipping catechists with practical tools for effective ministry.
Organised by Jeevan Jyoti Catechetical Centre, the half-day programme focused on the diocesan catechetical theme, “Walking with Christ, Forming Disciples,” highlighting the vital role catechists play in nurturing the faith of children and young people.
The gathering opened with an atmosphere of prayer and praise as the Yuvadarshan Team, together with Fr. Nilesh Tuscano, led participants in worship, setting a reflective tone for the day.
Welcoming the gathering, Fr. Vikesh Correia, Parish Priest of Christ the King Church, Bolinj, introduced participants to the newly constructed church and explained the significance of its liturgical symbols and sacred architecture. Reflecting on his pastoral journey, he shared his experience of Christ the King’s grace and mercy, expressed gratitude for the leadership of Bishop Thomas D’Souza of Vasai, and acknowledged the support of the parish community. He encouraged catechists to continue their mission of proclaiming the Gospel with dedication and enthusiasm.
A theme song specially composed by Fr. Nilesh Tuscano, Director of Jeevan Jyoti, was later presented, drawing enthusiastic participation from the catechists and reinforcing the spirit of discipleship that marked the gathering.
The central formation session was led by Fr. Nilesh Tuscano, who reflected on the theme “Walking with Christ, Forming Disciples.” He explored key pillars of catechesis, including faith formation, Christian tradition, liturgy, prayer and theology. Emphasising that faith involves the whole person, he reminded participants that Christian discipleship engages “the heart, mind and actions,” and called on catechists to help children develop a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.
The session also highlighted prayer, joyful service, forgiveness, sacrifice and interactive learning as essential dimensions of effective catechetical ministry.
An overview of the catechetical activities carried out by Jeevan Jyoti between June 2025 and April 2026 was presented by Miss Dolsy D’Costa, Sunday School Representative of the centre. Through a PowerPoint presentation, she outlined the various Sunday School and Confirmation programmes conducted during the year.
Practical training formed an important component of the gathering. Mrs. Snehal Martin of Giriz demonstrated an innovative catechism lesson for students of Grades 4 and 5 on the theme “God’s Love.” Integrating Scripture, videos, action songs, flashcards and quizzes, she showcased engaging methods that encourage active participation and deeper understanding among children.
The programme also provided an opportunity for catechists to share personal testimonies. Representatives from different parishes reflected on their experiences in catechetical ministry, speaking about the grace of God in their lives, the importance of prayer, challenges encountered in teaching the faith, and the joy of seeing former students actively involved in parish life and Church organisations.
Adding to the spirit of interaction and fellowship, catechists from Bolinj Parish animated the gathering with action songs and participatory activities throughout the testimony session.
A significant moment of the event was the unveiling of the Sunday School Planner by Fr. Nilesh Tuscano, Director of Jeevan Jyoti, and Fr. Avinash, Assistant Director, in the presence of priests and women religious.
The gathering concluded with a commissioning and pledge ceremony led by Fr. Johnson Menezes. Fr. Avinash blessed the catechists and commemorative mementos, while Fr. Johnson Menezes, Fr. Joel, Fr. Baptist Dabre and Fr. Rajesh Dabre offered individual prayers and blessings to the participants.
The programme ended with the distribution of planners and specially designed mementos inspired by the theme “Walking with Christ, Forming Disciples.” As they returned to their respective parishes, the catechists carried with them renewed enthusiasm and a strengthened commitment to their mission of forming young disciples in the faith.
The gathering underscored the Diocese of Vasai’s ongoing commitment to supporting catechists in their vital role as partners in the Church’s ministry of faith formation and Gospel proclamation.
