Udupi, 30 May 2025 – In a heartening act of faith and social responsibility, the Udupi Diocese inaugurated a major initiative as part of its preparations for the General Jubilee Year 2025. On Sunday, a newly built home named Ark of Hope was officially handed over to Mr. Vinod and Mrs. Angeline Pinto at Thottam St. Anne’s Church.
This project addresses the housing needs of the underprivileged and reflects the Diocese’s commitment to the Gospel call to serve the marginalised. The Pinto family, burdened by financial hardship and living in rented accommodation, became the first beneficiaries of this Jubilee initiative. Their dream of owning a home came true through the efforts of the parish community, entrepreneur and philanthropist Mr. Ronald Colaco, the Michael D’Souza Charity Trust, and numerous generous benefactors.
The fully furnished house, valued at approximately ₹14 lakhs, was completed through collaboration and sacrifice. Mr. Thomas and Mrs. Valeriana Noronha donated five cents of land, setting a rare example of selfless generosity. The construction was completed in just five months, with key support from engineer Errol and the parish council.
Rev. Fr. Denis D’Sa, Parish Priest of Thottam Church, presided over the handover and blessed the new home. He formally entrusted it to the Pinto family and addressed the congregation on the meaning of the moment.
“A home is more than just bricks and mortar,” he said. “It is the foundation of family life, a cradle of dreams, and a shelter of hope. This house, the Ark of Hope, stands as a living testament to what can be achieved when faith is translated into action, and when hearts are moved by compassion.”
He urged continued support for such projects, noting that many still lack basic shelter. The symbolic handing over of the house was not just a gift of shelter, but a powerful sign of the Church’s mission to uplift, restore, and renew.
The ceremony included heartfelt thanks to all contributors. Special mention was made of Mr. Ronald Colaco, the Michael D’Souza Charity Trust, and the many parishioners who offered financial and moral support. Mr. and Mrs. Noronha were honoured for their land donation, and engineer Errol was recognised for his role in overseeing the construction.
For the Pinto family, the house begins a new chapter of hope, security, and faith in their community’s kindness. Their gratitude was profound, and their story a clear example of love in action.
As the Udupi Diocese moves towards Jubilee 2025, the Ark of Hope stands as a beacon — calling the faithful to celebrate not only through prayer, but also through acts of love that echo Christ’s message.
