Colorado, USA, August 8, 2026: For many elderly people living in nursing homes, assisted living communities and memory care facilities, the greatest challenge is not simply physical frailty. It can also be loneliness, loss and spiritual isolation. The Rosary Team is addressing that need through a simple but powerful mission: showing up, praying together and reminding seniors that they remain valued members of the Church and the wider community.
Founded in 2019 by hospice and palliative care nurse Teresa Rodriguez in Boulder County, Colorado, The Rosary Team began after conversations about the limited spiritual support available to residents in care facilities. While homes offered numerous activities and forms of entertainment, Rodriguez and others recognised that many residents also needed opportunities for prayer, friendship and deeper spiritual companionship.
The ministry's approach is deliberately simple. Volunteers form teams and visit the same care facility at the same time each week. Rather than making occasional visits, they build relationships through consistency and familiarity.
Volunteers do not merely lead the Rosary for residents. They pray alongside them, listen to their stories, hold their hands and become trusted faces. For elderly people who may have lost their homes, physical independence, friends or loved ones, that regular presence can be profoundly meaningful.
The ministry describes this work as a way of helping seniors recognise that they still have an important role in the life of the Church. Their vocation to prayer does not end when they retire or move into residential care. They can continue praying for their families, communities, the sick, the dying and the needs of the world.
What began as a local initiative has developed into a growing national movement. The Rosary Team now supports more than 300 teams involving over 800 volunteers across dozens of US states. Together, the teams pray more than 120,000 Rosaries each year.
The ministry's long-term vision is ambitious: to establish a Rosary Team in every nursing home in America. With tens of thousands of senior living communities across the country, there remains enormous scope for the apostolate to grow.
Its expansion is supported by volunteers, donors, rosary makers and partner Catholic organisations. Handmade rosaries are also produced and sold to help fund the ministry, with rosary makers praying for those who will eventually receive them.
The impact of the weekly gatherings can be seen in the testimony of residents and volunteers. Some residents describe the Rosary as the highlight of their week. Others speak of the comfort it brings during a period of life when they are increasingly conscious of illness, loss and mortality.
One resident, Marty Todd, has reflected on how moving into a care facility can be a profound reminder of the fragility of life. Yet her experience with The Rosary Team has also shown her that these years can remain spiritually fruitful.
For volunteers, the ministry can be equally transformative. They discover that they are not simply giving their time to seniors; they are receiving friendship, wisdom and an example of faithful perseverance in return.
The Rosary Team emphasises that elderly residents are never a burden. Even when physical abilities decline, their capacity to love and pray remains.
This understanding lies at the heart of the ministry. Through the Rosary, residents are invited to place their personal intentions before God while also interceding for others. In this way, prayer becomes a continuing vocation and a meaningful service to the Church.
The ministry has also witnessed stories of renewed faith and conversion emerging from these relationships. Because participants do not have to be Catholic, the weekly gatherings can become an unexpected point of encounter with Catholic prayer and devotion.
There are several ways to support the mission. Volunteers can join or establish a Rosary Team and commit to visiting residents regularly. Those who enjoy crafts can help make rosaries, while others can become Prayer Champions who pray for residents, volunteers and the expansion of the ministry.
Donations and purchases from The Rosary Team's shop also help sustain the work.
At its heart, however, the ministry is built on something much simpler than programmes or fundraising: presence.
The Rosary Team reminds elderly people that they have not been forgotten. By gathering around a simple prayer, volunteers and residents create a space of friendship, peace and hope.
As Teresa Rodriguez has emphasised, no one retires from God's mission. Even in the final chapters of life, every person can pray, love and make a difference.
The Rosary Team's message is therefore both simple and profound: sometimes the most powerful ministry begins by simply showing up.
