August 8, 2026: For many Catholics, parish life begins and ends with Sunday Mass. But what if the Church could also be experienced in neighbourhoods, homes and small communities where people pray together, support one another and live out their faith in everyday life?
That vision is at the heart of the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) movement, one of the most vibrant initiatives of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). Today, more than 112,208 BEC communities across the country are helping Catholics experience the Church not simply as a place they visit, but as a community they belong to.
Bringing the Church Closer to Everyday Life
The mission of the CCBI Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities is simple but powerful: to help every parish become a vibrant community of faith through the active participation of ordinary Catholics.
Through leadership formation programmes, Gospel-sharing initiatives, seminars, workshops and training programmes, lay faithful are encouraged to live the values of the Gospel in their daily lives and become witnesses of Christ within their families, neighbourhoods and workplaces.
At its heart, the BEC movement reminds Catholics that the Church is not built only through structures or institutions. It grows when people come together in faith, care for one another and share responsibility for the mission of the Church.
A Community of Communities
One of the Commission's major contributions has been its commitment to building a truly Synodal Church—one where people journey together in faith and share responsibility for the Church's mission. Its programmes promote communion, participation and mission, encouraging bishops, priests, religious and lay faithful to work together in a spirit of shared responsibility.
Its initiatives are centred on promoting communion, participation and mission, in harmony with the vision of the Church and the CCBI's Pastoral Plan 2033. Through diocesan BEC teams, leadership gatherings, formation programmes and regional conventions, thousands of people have been inspired to take a more active role in the life of their parishes.
As a result, many Catholics have come to see BECs as an authentic way of living and experiencing the Church. In many dioceses, these communities have fostered deeper relationships, mutual care and a stronger sense of belonging among the faithful.
Forming the Next Generation
The Commission also places special emphasis on children and young people.
Through Gospel-sharing programmes, faith formation initiatives and community-based activities, many youth have developed a deeper connection with the Church and a stronger commitment to Gospel values. These efforts are helping to form future leaders who are rooted in faith and committed to the Church's mission.
Why was the Commission Created?
Recognising the growing importance of these small faith communities, the CCBI established the Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities during its XXXI Plenary Assembly in January 2019.
The bishops saw BECs as an effective way to promote Gospel values at the grassroots level and prepare Catholics to witness the compassionate ministry of the Church in their everyday situations. The decision followed discussions within the CCBI Executive Committee, which recognised the need for a dedicated commission to strengthen and expand this ministry across the country.
So, the next time you hear the term Basic Ecclesial Community, remember that it is much more than a Church programme. It is a vision of parish life where faith is shared, relationships are strengthened and every Catholic is encouraged to play an active role in the mission of the Church.
