Vatican, 6th May 2025: Few places in the Vatican are as emotionally charged and symbolic as the so-called “Sala del Pianto” — the "Room of Tears." Tucked inside the Sacristy of the Sistine Chapel, this small chamber is where the newly elected Pope retreats to don the white papal vestments for the very first time.
Awaiting him are three chests containing white robes in different sizes—small, medium, and large—ready to clothe whoever is chosen as the Successor of Peter. It is in this intimate space that the new Pope, often visibly moved, takes a moment of private reflection before appearing on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to greet the world.
The room’s name, “Room of Tears,” stems from the long-standing tradition of Popes being overwhelmed with emotion upon realizing the immense spiritual and human responsibility they are about to assume. In these few solitary minutes, prayer, humility, and the weight of leadership converge in a powerful, silent rite.
Here, the Pope prepares not only externally, but also internally—readying his heart and soul to lead the universal Church.
