Thrippunithura, June 23: In a moving act of compassion that has resonated across the country, a tea vendor in Kerala's Thrippunithura removed the mundu (dhoti) he was wearing and used it to cover a woman whose clothes were torn in a serious road accident, placing her dignity above all else as she lay injured on the roadside.
The incident occurred near Statue Junction in Thrippunithura when a 56-year-old woman riding a scooter was reportedly dragged several metres after coming under a bus. Local residents intervened and managed to stop the vehicle. The woman sustained serious injuries, and her clothes were torn during the ordeal.
Among the first to reach the scene was M.R. Shaji, 53, a tea vendor who has been supplying tea to shops, banks and offices in the area for decades. Seeing the injured woman exposed and in distress, Shaji immediately removed his mundu and used it to cover her. A nearby shopkeeper later provided him with another cloth.
Speaking to local media, Shaji said he did not hesitate before acting. His immediate concern, he said, was to ensure that the injured woman did not suffer further embarrassment while waiting for medical assistance.
Residents and bystanders subsequently helped move the victim into an autorickshaw and rushed her to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident gained widespread attention after CCTV footage of Shaji's gesture surfaced online and quickly went viral. Social media users praised his presence of mind, empathy and respect for human dignity, describing the act as a powerful reminder that compassion remains alive in society.
Despite the acclaim, Shaji has remained modest, insisting that he merely did what anyone should do in similar circumstances. Friends, neighbours and local residents have hailed him as an example of everyday heroism, saying his instinctive response reflected genuine concern for another person's well-being.
For many, the image of a man giving away his own mundu to protect the dignity of a stranger has become a symbol of humanity amid tragedy — a simple act of kindness that has left a profound impact far beyond the streets of Thrippunithura.
