Silver Jubilee of Srs. Rita Fernandes and Alzira D’Souza Celebrated in Calangute, Goa

Calangute, Goa, May 13, 2025: The Silver Jubilee of the religious profession of Sisters Rita Fernandes and Alzira D’Souza was celebrated on Monday, May 12, 2025, at St. Alex Church in Calangute. The celebration, held under the theme “Twenty-five years with Jesus: a journey of hope and thanksgiving to God”, was attended by clergy, religious, parishioners, and family members of Sisters Rita and Alzira, who belong to the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth (SFN).

Bishop Simiao Purificação Fernandes, Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman, presided over the Eucharistic celebration, joined by 18 concelebrating priests. In his homily, he emphasised the transformative power of love and service by reflecting on the life of St. Mother Teresa.

Addressing the Jubilarians, Bishop Simiao drew from the letters in their names— ’Ta’ (in Rita) and ‘Ra’ (in Alzira)—and affectionately referred to them as “stars”, shining through their dedicated service. He also mentioned that the letters TARA stand for T for Thanksgiving, A for Appreciation, R for Reverence, and A for Apostolate—underscoring the enduring commitment and faithfulness of Srs. Rita and Alzira.

His Lordship connected their spiritual journey to the Emmaus encounter in the Gospel, highlighting how the sisters, like the disciples, walked in faith, often through uncertainty, yet always led by Christ's presence. Their 25-year pilgrimage of service, he said, mirrors the disciples’ recognition of Christ and their mission of hope and renewal.

After Communion, Sr. Alzira led a prayer of thanksgiving, expressing heartfelt gratitude for God's constant companionship. Sr. Rita, in her brief address, acknowledged the support of her religious community, family, and parishioners, thanking all who contributed to the grace-filled celebration.

The event concluded with a community gathering marked by fellowship, cake-cutting, and a traditional Goan Mando performed by parishioners of Calangute, in honour of the Jubilarians. Sr. Precilla coordinated the celebration, while the parish choir led the congregation in soulful hymns. Fr. Jovito D Costa, the curate of St. Alex Church, extended the parish’s congratulations and appreciation for the sisters’ service.

Parishioners from Usgao and Sanguem expressed admiration for the Jubilarians' tireless dedication. Felix Fernandes, Sr. Rita’s brother, offered a moving tribute, recognising God's blessings on his sister and her ability to connect warmly with those she serves.

The Silver Jubilee celebration of Srs. Rita and Alzira was a moment of deep spiritual reflection and heartfelt appreciation, serving as a powerful witness to their faith-filled journey and dedication to the Church.
