Self-Help Groups Take Centre Stage at International Women’s Day Programme in Siolim

Goa, March 11, 2026: Women from sixteen self-help groups in Siolim gathered for a community-focused celebration of International Women’s Day, organised by Caritas Goa in collaboration with the Social Unit of the Missionary Sisters of the Queen of the Apostles (Sororum Reginae Apostolorum - SRA) and the parish of St. Anthony’s Church. The event highlighted women’s participation, creativity and collective strength at the grassroots level.

Held on March 9 at St Anthony’s Church, the programme brought together members of self-help groups who have been actively involved in community initiatives in the region. The celebration began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr. Marcos D’Souza MSFS, providing a moment of prayer and reflection for the participating women.

Following the liturgical celebration, the programme continued in the church compound with a series of interactive and creative activities designed to encourage teamwork and expression. Each of the sixteen groups was assigned a table with a vase to decorate, and the participants responded enthusiastically by creating colourful floral arrangements that reflected their creativity and collaborative spirit.

Another activity, titled “Cooking Without Fire,” was conducted under the guidance of Mr. Ashton Souza. Working within a limited time, the women prepared a variety of dishes, demonstrating both their resourcefulness and their ability to work together.

The gathering also featured a cultural segment with a performance of the traditional Goan Mando by Mr. Braz and his troupe, adding a touch of local heritage and festivity to the event.

Reflecting on the theme of the International women's day "Give to Gain", Fr. Maverick Fernandes Director Caritas Goa said that God created the woman, at every stage of her life, with a heart that always knows to give so that the world would gain in abundance.

Infact, the world without women would have been a very selfish one and therefore we have to be always grateful towards women for their inherent generosity, Fr. Fernandes stated.

During the programme, recognition was given to groups that have consistently maintained records of their activities. The “Marie Goretti” self-help group received the first prize, while the “Milan” group secured second place for their presentation.

The initiative was coordinated by the SRA Sisters under the leadership of Sr. Shirley Fernandes SRA, bringing together the participating groups in a celebration that emphasised collaboration, creativity and the important role of women in community life.

The programme reflected the continuing efforts of Caritas Goa and the local parish community to support women’s groups and strengthen their participation in social and community engagement.
