Indian Institute of Spirituality Holds 36th Annual Convocation in Bengaluru

Bengaluru, March 11, 2026: The Indian Institute of Spirituality (IIS), incorporated with the St Peter’s Pontifical Institute in Bengaluru, celebrated its 36th Annual Convocation, marking an important milestone for students completing their programme in spiritual and theological formation.

The celebration began with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Bp Antony Valungal, who also formally declared the convocation open. Faculty members, students and Church leaders gathered for the event to recognise the academic achievements and formative journey of the graduating candidates.

Delivering the convocation address, Dr. A. Lawrence, President of St Peter’s Pontifical Institute, encouraged students to nurture a deep spiritual life and integrate it with their pastoral mission. He reminded the graduates that authentic ministry is rooted in prayer, reflection and a committed witness to the Gospel.

Addressing the gathering, Fr. Benny G. Koottanal, Director of the Institute, reflected on the vision and purpose of formation at IIS. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp marked the beginning of the programme, symbolising Christ as the light who enlightens the minds and hearts of those seeking knowledge and spiritual growth. The proclamation of the Word of God by Sr. Preeti Soreng, a member of the Prabhudasi Sisters of Ajmer (PSA) invited participants to reflect on the transforming power of Scripture.

During the ceremony, diploma students took a pledge committing themselves to serve the Church and society following their formation at the institute. As part of the programme, the students presented a thematic performance titled “From the Mountain to the Plain,” symbolising their readiness to move from contemplation to active ministry under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Fr. Tony Thomas Munduchalil, Prefect of Studies, presented the annual academic report for 2025–2026, highlighting the institute’s academic initiatives, formation programmes and other activities undertaken during the year.

The graduating candidates were formally admitted and awarded the Diploma in Spiritual Theology by Bishop Valungal. Certificates were also presented to postgraduate students who successfully completed a German language course offered by the institute.

Students also shared personal reflections on their formative journey at IIS. In his concluding remarks, Fr. Koottanal congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to carry forward the spirit of prayer, discernment and service in their future ministries.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Fr. Joby James MSFS, Assistant Manager of SFS Publications, while the programme was moderated by Fr. Ajay Lobo.

The convocation highlighted the institute’s continuing commitment to nurturing spiritual formation and preparing individuals for dedicated service in the Church and society.
