Austria, October 31, 2026 : True holiness is not measured by power, wealth, or position, but by the willingness to serve God and care for others. Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, a Benedictine monk, missionary, and bishop of the tenth century, devoted his life to strengthening the Church, educating the faithful, reforming monasteries, and helping people in need. His humility and generosity continue to inspire Catholics today.
Wolfgang was born into a noble family in Swabia, Germany. From an early age, he showed a strong interest in learning and faith. He received his education at the Benedictine monastery school on the island of Reichenau and later attended the cathedral school in Würzburg.

His friendship with Henry, who later became Archbishop of Trier, helped shape his religious journey. Wolfgang eventually moved to Trier, where he became a teacher and leader of the cathedral school. He also supported efforts to reform the clergy and encourage a more faithful religious life.
Rather than pursuing a powerful Church position, Wolfgang chose a simpler path. Around 965, he entered the Benedictine monastery at Einsiedeln in present-day Switzerland. He was ordained a priest around 968 and later became involved in missionary work among communities in the region of Hungary.
In 972, Wolfgang was appointed Bishop of Regensburg. He accepted this responsibility with humility and worked tirelessly to renew the spiritual life of his diocese.
He encouraged priests to live according to their religious commitments, supported monastic reform, promoted education, and helped strengthen the Church's mission. He also played an important role in the establishment of the Diocese of Prague by agreeing to the separation of Bohemian territories from his own diocese.
Wolfgang was particularly remembered for his generosity towards the poor. He provided assistance to people facing hardship and used his position to serve rather than seek personal influence. His concern for those in need earned him a reputation as a great benefactor.
Although Wolfgang carried significant responsibilities, he never abandoned his love for prayer and solitude. According to tradition, he once withdrew to a quiet place near what is now Wolfgangsee in Austria. His time away reflected his desire for a deeper life with God, although he eventually returned to his episcopal duties.
In 994, while travelling through Austria, Wolfgang became seriously ill. He died on October 31 in the village of Pupping. His body was brought to Regensburg and buried at the monastery of Saint Emmeram.
His reputation for holiness spread widely, and in 1052 Pope Saint Leo IX formally recognised his sanctity. His relics continue to be venerated at Saint Emmeram in Regensburg.
Saint Wolfgang teaches us that leadership is a responsibility of service, not an opportunity for personal glory. His dedication to education reminds us to deepen our understanding of faith, while his generosity challenges us to care for people experiencing poverty and hardship.
His example also encourages Catholics to balance active service with prayer and spiritual reflection. Even amid demanding responsibilities, time spent with God can renew our strength and purpose.
Saint Wolfgang of Regensburg, pray for us!
