From Bartholomew to Saint Sergius

Saint Sergius was born with the name Bartholomew to a devout family near Rostov. His family later moved to Radonezh during a period of political and social upheaval. According to his traditional biography, Bartholomew experienced difficulties with learning as a child but eventually received help from a mysterious elder who prayed for him.

After the death of his parents, Bartholomew chose the monastic life. Together with his brother Stephen, he withdrew into the forest and built a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Bartholomew was later tonsured as a monk and received the name Sergius.

A Life of Prayer and Hard Work

Sergius embraced a simple life of prayer, fasting and manual labour. He personally carried out humble tasks such as fetching water, chopping wood, baking bread and preparing food for the community.
