Vatican City, 6 June, 2025 - A spirit of joy and mission filled Castel Gandolfo recently, as a group of religious women bid farewell to their temporary home after completing studies at pontifical universities in Rome. Supported by scholarships from the Dicastery for Evangelisation, these sisters—primarily from Asian and African countries—pursued academic formation at institutions such as the Pontifical Urban University (Pontificia Università Urbaniana).
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery and Grand Chancellor of the Urbaniana, presided over the farewell Mass at the Collegio Missionario “Mater Ecclesiae” in Castel Gandolfo. The sisters, drawn from various congregations, had lived together in the community while travelling daily to Rome for classes and research.
Though tinged with sadness, the occasion was marked by celebration, gratitude, and a shared sense of purpose. Cardinal Tagle, in his homily, reflected on the biblical encounter between Mary and Elizabeth—both entrusted with seemingly impossible pregnancies. He reminded the sisters that openness to the Holy Spirit transforms human limitations into instruments of God’s grace. “Carry the Lord’s presence with you,” he urged, “and be witnesses of His love and mercy in a world that often walks in darkness.”
Sr. Genowefa Kudlik, Director of the Collegio, commended the sisters for their commitment and growth. She encouraged them to share their skills generously—not only within their congregations but in service to the wider Church and society. “Anything is possible if we open our hearts to God,” she affirmed.
Among those departing was Sr. Evelyn Awona from Ghana, who spent six years in Rome earning a Bachelor’s degree in Religious Sciences and a Licentiate in Canon Law. She expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity and looks forward to applying her learning to benefit her community, congregation, and the Church.
The farewell was marked more than the end of an academic journey—it was a celebration of transformation. These sisters leave Castel Gandolfo enriched in knowledge, faith, and fellowship, ready to take up new responsibilities with courage, humility, and conviction. Their journey reflects the enduring mission of the Dicastery for Evangelisation: to form leaders who will sow seeds of faith, justice, and service in every corner of the world.
