Refresher Course Empowers Catechists in the Spirit of the Synodal Church

Yusuf Sadan, Kauli, Punjab, July 25, 2025: A week-long Refresher Course for Catechists, organised by the Diocese of Simla-Chandigarh, concluded successfully at Yusuf Sadan, Kauli – Centre for Evangelisation and Proclamation – on 25 July 2025. Held under the theme “Four Pillars of Our Faith: Creed, Commandments, Scripture, and Prayer,” the programme aimed to deepen catechists’ understanding of the Catholic faith and renew their commitment to evangelisation.

A total of 27 male catechists and 10 religious sisters actively involved in catechetical ministry participated in the course, held from 21 to 25 July.

The programme began with the inaugural Mass on 22 July, celebrated by Bishop Dr. Sahaya Thatheus Thomas, Bishop of the Simla-Chandigarh Diocese. In his address, the bishop stressed the urgent need for evangelisation in today's world and called on catechists to become “authentic witnesses of the Gospel in contemporary society.”

Daily Holy Eucharist celebrations, presided over by priests including Fr. Devesia VC, Fr. Biju VC, and Fr. George Abraham, spiritually prepared the participants for each day's sessions.

The course featured a range of expert resource persons who offered theological, pastoral, and practical insights.

Mr. Mathew, Director of Evangelisation and Proclamation (Archdiocese of Delhi), delivered talks on the Gospel of Mark, Evangelii Gaudium, and Evangelii Nuntiandi.

Mrs. Bernadett, from the same team, offered reflections on the Apostles’ Creed, led music ministry, adoration, and hosted Q&A sessions to clarify participants’ doubts on matters of faith.

Fr. James Gin, of the Diocesan Minor Seminary, presented a session on understanding Islam to encourage interreligious dialogue.

Fr. Vianney, Commissions’ Coordinator, highlighted the importance of catechesis for all age groups and introduced Church-approved resources to assist catechists.

Mr. Sameer Lakra, Secretary of the Laity Commission, spoke on empowering catechists within the Synodal Church, urging collaboration, participation, and missionary zeal.

Interactive group-building activities such as “Get to Know Each Other”, along with a comprehensive exam covering Scripture, Church Teachings, Commandments, and Prayer Life, reinforced learning and understanding.

The programme was led by Fr. Sunil K.V., Director of Evangelisation and Proclamation, with a special vote of thanks extended to Fr. Rexen for designing ID cards and a Manual Chart for daily reflection. Gratitude was also expressed to the Vincentian Fathers for their support in facilitating the course.

The refresher course proved to be both spiritually uplifting and intellectually enriching, aiming to renew and empower catechists in their mission of faith formation within the Synodal Church.
