Karwar, July 25, 2025 – The Laity Commission of the Diocese of Karwar hosted a significant get-together for Chief Executive Officers and Managing Directors of Catholic cooperative banks at Puneeth Sadan, Shirwad, Karwar. The one-day event aimed to foster leadership rooted in faith, professional excellence, and collaboration.
The programme commenced with an opening prayer and a warm welcome from Fr. Lancy Rodrigues, Director of the Diocesan Laity Commission, setting a reflective and engaging tone for the day.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Duming Dias, Bishop of Karwar, underscored the need for strategic thinking and effective leadership in Catholic institutions. He introduced the SWOT analysis framework—highlighting Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats—as a crucial tool for both organisational development and personal discernment. Bishop Dias stressed that sustainable and mission-oriented leadership requires thoughtful planning and a clear sense of purpose.
A compelling address by Fr. Richard Rodrigues followed, focusing on the “Role of the Laity in the Church.” He traced the historical involvement of laypeople in the Church, including before the Second Vatican Council, and encouraged Catholic professionals to embrace their vocation as active participants in the Church’s mission through their professional engagements.
Mr. George Fernandes, a seasoned banker, shared his expertise on the practicalities of starting a cooperative bank. He elaborated on essential legal regulations, the necessity of choosing dedicated and skilled personnel, and the importance of ongoing training to uphold both excellence and ethical integrity within Catholic financial institutions.
Fr. Lancy Rodrigues expressed heartfelt appreciation to Bishop Dias for his inspiring leadership, to the guest speakers for their enriching contributions, and to all participating CEOs and MDs for their active involvement, which contributed to the overall success of the gathering.
The programme concluded with a dynamic interactive session, offering participants the opportunity to share their experiences, discuss challenges, and build networks for future collaboration.
The event marked a milestone in strengthening the role of Catholic cooperative banks as instruments of community empowerment and ethical financial practice within the Church’s broader mission.
