PURNЕA, October 16, 2026: The Diocese of Purnea trained 58 priests, religious and lay catechists in promoting Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) during a Training of Trainers workshop held at the Diocesan Pastoral Centre on October 15.
The workshop focused on strengthening grassroots faith formation, encouraging active participation in the Church’s mission and equipping participants with practical skills to facilitate Gospel sharing in their respective parishes.
Bishop Francis Tirkey of Purnea highlighted the role of Basic Ecclesial Communities in building a vibrant, participatory and faith-centred Church. He urged participants to promote BEC in their parishes, fostering Christian fellowship, deepening faith and encouraging greater involvement of the faithful in the Church’s mission.
Fr George Jacob, SAC, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities, led a session on “What Is the Basic Understanding of BEC for Our Parishes?” He explained the purpose and significance of these communities in parish life, emphasising their role in nurturing faith, communion, mutual support and Christian commitment through regular engagement with the Word of God.
Emmanuel Johnson, a member of the National Council for BEC, addressed the need for Basic Ecclesial Communities. He highlighted their contribution to strengthening Christian fellowship, bringing families together, promoting Gospel sharing and enabling the faithful to take greater responsibility for the life and mission of the Church. He urged participants to make BEC a pastoral priority and work towards establishing and strengthening these communities in their parishes.
The afternoon sessions focused on the practical application of the Seven Steps of Gospel Sharing. Participants learned how to listen prayerfully to Scripture, reflect on its message, share their faith experiences and discern ways to put the Gospel into practice in their daily lives. A practical exercise helped them experience the process and develop the skills needed to animate BEC meetings effectively.
The workshop also outlined strategies for sustaining and expanding BEC across the diocese. Participants were encouraged to organise regular Gospel-sharing meetings, train and accompany BEC animators, involve families and parishioners actively, and ensure effective coordination and follow-up.
The training concluded with a renewed commitment among participants to strengthen Basic Ecclesial Communities and build a participatory, Christ-centred Church rooted in the Word of God.
