Pope Leo XIV urges Rosary Prayer for Peace, Announces Synodal Gathering on Families

Vatican City, October 4, 2026 — Pope Leo XIV renewed his appeal for an end to wars and urged the faithful to pray the Rosary for peace and unity in the world following the Angelus on Sunday.

Speaking from the window of the Apostolic Palace, the Pope thanked children taking part in the Aid to the Church in Need initiative, “One Million Children Praying the Holy Rosary”, and invited others to follow their example.

“I wholeheartedly thank all the boys and girls who are joining in this prayer in so many parts of the world. Let us all follow their example, invoking the intercession of the Virgin Mary so that peoples may be freed from the scourge of war. In particular, let us pray for the Holy Land and for the innocent victims of violence,” Pope Leo said.

The initiative began at the start of October with the Pope in the Vatican Gardens and will continue until October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Dioceses, parishes, schools, communities and families around the world can choose a suitable day to join the prayer.

Synodal discernment on families

Pope Leo also announced a week-long gathering beginning October 7 to mark the tenth anniversary of Pope Francis’ post-synodal apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia.

The gathering will take place in the Paul VI Hall in the Pope’s presence and will bring together the heads of the Eastern Churches and presidents of Episcopal Conferences. Bishops and married couples from the five continents will also share their testimonies.

The meeting will examine the situation of families today and seek ways to renew and strengthen the choice of marriage amid its decline in various parts of the world.

“It will be a time of synodal discernment for identifying the steps to be taken in order to proclaim the Gospel today among families and the younger generations,” Pope Leo said.

He entrusted the gathering to the prayers of the faithful, particularly families, whom he described as “a sign of hope and an inestimable treasure for the Church and for society”.

Pope recalls St. Francis

Pope Leo also highlighted St. Francis of Assisi, expressing joy over commemorative initiatives marking the 800th anniversary of the saint’s death, particularly those in Assisi.

He also greeted amateur radio operators from Assisi and Foligno who are spreading St. Francis’ message of peace.
