Pope Leo XIV: The Trinity Leads Humanity to Communion and Peace

Vatican City, May 31, 2026— Pope Leo XIV urged Christians to embrace the spirit of communion and peace as he reflected on the mystery of the Holy Trinity during his Angelus address in St Peter’s Square on the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity.

Addressing thousands of pilgrims, the Pope said the celebration invites believers to reflect on God’s life revealed through Jesus Christ. He described the life of the Triune God as a dynamic and inexhaustible communion of faith that draws humanity into a deeper relationship with God and with one another.

The Pope explained that the Holy Spirit, who unites the Father and the Son, has been placed in the hearts of believers, enabling the Church to become “a sacrament of communion” and a place where people encounter love, life and God’s presence.

Reflecting on the day’s Gospel, Pope Leo focused on Nicodemus, the Jewish leader who sought Jesus under the cover of darkness. Although Nicodemus initially approached Jesus discreetly, he encountered a transformative message about spiritual rebirth and the saving love of God.

The Pope highlighted Jesus’ words that God sent His Son into the world not to condemn it but to save it. He said this truth continues to illuminate hearts and remains central to the Church’s proclamation.

Pope Leo noted that the mystery of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit reveals humanity’s true vocation for relationship, communion and encounter. He warned that division, polarisation and the rejection of diversity lead to sadness, destruction and a growing sense of emptiness.

Using Nicodemus as an example, the Pope recalled how he defended the need to listen before judging Jesus, demonstrating an openness to truth inspired by the Spirit. Such openness, the Pope said, allows genuine renewal and deeper understanding.

“Whoever does not welcome this Spirit grows old quickly, in sorrow, feeling all alone and without joy in their hearts,” he said.

Concluding his reflection, Pope Leo described the solemnity as a celebration of God’s life shared with humanity. Inviting the faithful to follow the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he encouraged them to respond generously to God’s will so that their “yes” to the love of the Most Holy Trinity may bear lasting fruit.
