Pope Leo XIV: Faith Opens Our Eyes to Human Suffering

Vatican City, March 16, 2026: Pope Leo XIV urged Christians to allow faith to open their eyes to the suffering of humanity during his Sunday Angelus address in St Peter’s Square.

Reflecting on the Gospel passage about Jesus healing a man born blind (Gospel of John), the Pope said the episode reveals the deeper meaning of salvation. He explained that the Son of God came to bring light to humanity, which lives in spiritual darkness.

The Pope said people, like the man in the Gospel, are often “born blind” to the true mystery of life, which extends far beyond human understanding. God, he said, became human in Jesus Christ so that humanity might receive new light and learn to see themselves, others and God truthfully.

Addressing common misconceptions, Pope Leo XIV rejected the idea that faith is a “leap in the dark” that requires believers to close their eyes and accept things blindly. Instead, he said encountering Christ allows people to see reality more clearly.

“Faith is not a blind act or a rejection of reason,” the Pope said. “Rather, it helps us see the world as Jesus sees it.”

He urged Christians to recognise the suffering and hardships affecting people around them. At a time when violence and injustice continue to affect societies worldwide, he said believers must demonstrate an alert and prophetic faith.

According to the Pope, faith should not distance believers from the world’s problems but should make them more aware of them. He encouraged Christians to respond by promoting peace, justice and solidarity while bringing the light of the Gospel to others.

Concluding his address, Pope Leo XIV asked for the intercession of Virgin Mary so that Christ may open people’s hearts and strengthen them to bear witness to their faith with simplicity and courage.
