Vatican city, November 27, 2024: Pope Francis has urged Catholic bishops worldwide to accept and implement the final document of the Synod on Synodality, emphasizing its role as an authoritative guide for the Church’s mission in the 21st century. In a note accompanying the document, signed on the Feast of Christ the King, the Pope declared that the text “participates in the ordinary Magisterium of the Successor of Peter,” and called on bishops to lead their dioceses in building a synodal and missionary Church, rooted in communion, participation and mission.
The final document, approved by the Synod Assembly on October 26, 2024, serves as a result of a two-year process initiated by Pope Francis in October 2021. The document, reflecting the collective discernment of both the People of God and Church leaders, is not just a reflection but a guide for concrete actions. Pope Francis made it clear that while the document is not strictly normative, it calls for the Church to make choices consistent with its guidelines and to engage in discernment processes for local adaptation.
This document, which includes key proposals for liturgical reforms and new forms of ministry, marks the conclusion of the synodal assembly but signifies the beginning of the next phase for local Churches. Bishops are tasked with incorporating the document’s directives into their diocesan practices and reporting on the progress during their upcoming ad limina visits. Pope Francis acknowledged that full implementation will take time but emphasized that “creative activation of new forms of ministry and missionary action” may be needed in some contexts.
Furthermore, the Pope reminded the faithful that the synodal journey also has an ecumenical purpose, aiming for the visible unity of all Christians. As bishops and local churches embark on this journey of implementation, they are encouraged to continue fostering unity within the broader Christian community through shared words and actions.
The task of overseeing the implementation phase has been entrusted to the General Secretariat of the Synod, in collaboration with the Roman Curia’s dicasteries, ensuring that the Church remains faithful to its synodal calling while adapting to the needs of the modern world.
