Vatican City, April 6, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has said that Christ’s Resurrection opens humanity to “a hope that never fails” and confirms that death no longer has power, as he celebrated Easter Sunday Mass in Saint Peter’s Square before more than 50,000 faithful.
In his homily, the Pope proclaimed that Easter reveals a new light across creation, as believers rejoice in the message that “Christ is risen from the dead, and with him, we too rise to new life.” He stressed that the Resurrection embraces both human life and the course of history, offering hope even in moments of despair.
“The proclamation of Easter opens us up to a hope that never fails, to a light that never fades, to a fullness of joy that nothing can take away,” he said, adding that “death has been conquered forever” and no longer holds power over humanity.
Pope Leo acknowledged that this message of hope can be difficult to accept in a world marked by suffering and injustice. He pointed to both internal struggles—such as sin and loss of hope—and external realities including oppression, violence, and war, which continue to wound humanity and burden the most vulnerable.
Despite these challenges, the Pope urged the faithful to “lift our gaze and open our hearts,” affirming that the Risen Lord remains present. He said the Resurrection reveals that death is not humanity’s final destiny and that all are called towards fulfilment in Christ.
Quoting from Evangelii Gaudium, he reiterated that the Resurrection is not merely a past event but a living force in the world, capable of bringing new life even amid darkness, injustice, and indifference.
Concluding his message, Pope Leo said the Risen Christ offers certain hope and signals the dawn of a new life stronger than death. He called on Christians to become witnesses of this hope, encouraging them to share the joy of the Resurrection so that “wherever the spectre of death still lingers, the light of life may shine.”
The Easter Sunday celebration marked one of the most significant moments in the Christian calendar, reaffirming faith in the victory of life over death and the enduring promise of hope.
