Dubai, April 6, 2026 — In an extraordinary turn of events during one of Christianity’s most sacred seasons, faithful across Dubai adapted with resilience and devotion as churches remained closed during Easter, prompting thousands to turn to online Masses or travel to neighbouring emirates to keep their faith alive.
The unprecedented closures, which began on April 3, came amid heightened precautionary measures across the United Arab Emirates due to regional tensions linked to the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict. Authorities directed all places of worship to suspend in-person services and shift to virtual platforms, prioritizing public safety.
The restrictions coincided with Holy Week—the most significant period in the Christian calendar, commemorating the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For many believers, the inability to attend church in person was deeply felt, yet it also sparked creative and heartfelt expressions of faith.
Families across Dubai tuned into online Masses, participated in prayer services from home, and engaged in Scripture readings, ensuring that the spiritual essence of Easter remained intact despite physical limitations.
For some, however, the desire to attend physical Mass led to early morning journeys beyond city limits. Many residents travelled to churches in neighbouring emirates such as Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, where services continued.
At St Anthony of Padua Church and St Michael’s Church, congregations saw a surge in attendance, with long queues forming as worshippers from Dubai gathered to celebrate the Eucharist.
For many, the journey itself became a meaningful act of devotion—an expression of commitment to faith even in challenging circumstances.
Others embraced the spirit of the “domestic church,” transforming their homes into spaces of prayer and celebration. Families organized Scripture readings, shared meals, and recreated Easter traditions in intimate settings.
From Filipino feasts featuring traditional dishes to American-style Easter lunches, households across the UAE blended cultural heritage with spiritual observance. Activities such as Easter egg hunts and creative workshops for children added joy and community spirit to the celebrations.
Online platforms played a crucial role in keeping the faithful connected. Churches shared liturgical resources, prayer guides, and live-streamed services, enabling believers to participate in the liturgy virtually.
This shift highlighted the growing role of digital ministry in times of crisis, ensuring that the Church continues to accompany the faithful even when physical gatherings are not possible.
Despite the closures, the Christian community across the UAE demonstrated remarkable unity, adaptability, and devotion. Whether through long drives to neighbouring emirates, quiet prayers at home, or virtual participation, the faithful found ways to honour the resurrection of Christ.
This Easter stands as a powerful reminder that while church doors may close temporarily, faith transcends physical boundaries—living on in the hearts, homes, and journeys of believers.
