Vatican City, March 12, 2026: Pontifical Academy for Life has launched an international appeal inviting scientists, researchers, and academics around the world to take concrete actions aimed at promoting peace.
As conflicts continue in different parts of the world, the Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life has called on scientists globally to contribute actively to efforts that promote peace.
“At this particular moment in history when the language of weapons and war and the unleashing of violence take on a tragic global significance, which also limits scientific research, scientists and academics around the world are called upon to take a stand for peace and to engage in the search for ways of reconciliation and conflict resolution, starting from the daily practice of their research,” explained a statement released on Wednesday, March 11.
The appeal was initiated by the Pontifical Academy for Life and is supported by the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.
It is open to scientists, researchers, and academics from every discipline, regardless of nationality, cultural background, political views, or religious affiliation.
Promoting and defending human life
The appeal outlines several areas of focus for researchers, scientists, and academics. These include encouraging collaborative research projects involving people from different cultures, monitoring the risk that scientific research could be misused or applied for unintended purposes—such as in the military sector—and recognizing research as an important means of fostering peace.
The Academy noted that this initiative aligns with one of its objectives: to encourage interdisciplinary studies on "issues concerning the promotion and defense of human life.”
"Guided by the pursuit of truth, scientific research is based on rigorous methodologies and grows through the sharing of knowledge and a willingness to continually question itself," said the statement.
The Academy also urged that competition and debate within the scientific community be grounded in “transparent communication” and aim “to overcome personal interests, with the aim of contributing to the common heritage of knowledge, even beyond national borders.”
The appeal can be signed through the website of the Pontifical Academy for Life.
