Khatima, UP, March 12, 2026: The International Women’s Day was marked with a vibrant Women’s Pride Walk and recognition ceremony at the parish in Khatima in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bareilly, celebrating the dedication, talents and contributions of women within the Church community.
The initiative brought together parishioners in a public expression of appreciation for women’s role in family, Church and society. Organisers highlighted the support extended by men in the community—priests, fathers, grandfathers, brothers, husbands, sons and friends—who stand alongside women in their journey towards dignity and empowerment.
The celebration also echoed the mission of the CCBI Commission for Women of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India, which works to empower Catholic women across the country. The commission promotes gender equality, addresses issues such as domestic violence, and encourages women’s participation in Church and social life through spiritual formation and socio-economic initiatives.
As part of the observance, the diocese honoured women who had excelled in a carol singing competition held in December. The event, which encouraged participation from both men and women, recognised the winners with trophies for first, second and third places, along with consolation prizes.
Bishop Ignatius D’Souza of Bareilly, along with the priests of the diocese, has continued to promote initiatives that recognise women’s leadership and contributions. These include appointing women as principals in Catholic schools, acknowledging the leadership of women religious, and offering guidance and support for women facing personal or social challenges.
The diocese has also encouraged the formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in parishes to strengthen women’s economic and social participation. These groups have been developed under the guidance of Fr. Pius and Sr. Preethi, who have also organised training programmes to build women’s skills and confidence.
The carol singing competition was coordinated by Fr. Vijay and Fr. Arun, who introduced separate categories for men and women in youth and Crusveer groups to encourage wider participation and recognise women’s achievements.
Programmes aimed at promoting women’s dignity and leadership were further supported by Fr. Harold, Dean of Poliganj Deanery, together with Fr. Peter Malithara, Fr. Shaji and Fr. Sunil.
The Women’s Day celebration reflected the diocese’s ongoing commitment to recognising the gifts of women and strengthening their participation in the life and mission of the Church.
