Vatican city, December 17, 2024: Trust is a fundamental attitude that sustains relationships and opens pathways to the future, said the Preacher of the Papal Household, Fr. Roberto Pasolini. Delivering his second Advent sermon to Pope Francis and the Roman Curia at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, Fr. Pasolini emphasized the vital role of trust in fostering hope and authenticity in human and divine relationships.
In his homily, the Italian Capuchin friar explained that trust is not merely an optimistic outlook but a "wise decision that keeps hope alive." He underscored that trust fosters authenticity in one’s relationship with God and manifests in attentive, compassionate interactions with others.
Fr. Pasolini illustrated his message with three biblical figures. He began with the Roman centurion from the Gospel of Luke, who expressed profound trust in Jesus by declaring, "Say the word, and my servant will be healed" (Luke 7:7). The preacher called this statement a “remarkable expression of trust in God and in the well-being of others.”
He also highlighted Saint Joseph’s example, who, despite his initial anguish over Mary’s unexpected pregnancy, chose the path of fidelity and compassion. Fr. Pasolini described Joseph as an “icon of trust” who teaches believers how to adapt courageously to life’s uncertainties while serving others with love.
Delving deeper, Fr. Pasolini stressed that trust in God is intrinsically tied to one’s attentiveness to others. “Our relationship with God is only as authentic as our willingness to show trust and kindness in our interactions with others,” he stated.
He urged believers to embrace the Advent season as an opportunity to step through the “door of trust,” rediscovering faith in God, in themselves, and in others. This, he noted, enables Christians to recognize the good around them and accept life’s realities, even when they are uncomfortable.
Fr. Pasolini’s Advent reflections mark his first as Papal Household Preacher, a role he assumed in November following his appointment by Pope Francis. He succeeds Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, who served as papal preacher for 44 years before retiring at age 90.
Through his sermons, Fr. Pasolini is carving a distinct path, encouraging the faithful to renew their trust in God and one another as a foundation for hope and meaningful relationships.
