Norbertine Abbey in Jabalpur Celebrates Silver Jubilee

Jabalpur, October 25, 2025 — St. Norbert Abbey Canonry of Jamtara in Jabalpur marked a significant milestone, celebrating the Silver Jubilee of its elevation to Abbey status. The Norbertine Fathers gathered to commemorate the year 2000, when their community was canonically raised to an Abbey — a distinction that makes it the only Norbertine Abbey in all of Asia.

The community’s commitment to service remains steadfast, with 130 Norbertine Fathers currently working across seven states. Their ministries span diverse fields, including pastoral care, education, social work, and media communication — embodying their founder’s call to be “prepared for all good works.”

A three-day Chapter was held at St. Norbert Abbey, a period of deep reflection and fellowship. The Chapter was inaugurated with the Holy Eucharist, presided over by the Bishop Valan Arasu, Bishop of Jabalpur.

The community spent the days in “deep discussion and sharing” to reflect on and renew their dedication to their core mission. Further, new leadership was elected: Fr. Retin Raj, Fr. Anil Bara, and Fr. Benedict Paulraj will serve as the council members entrusted with guiding the community’s future endeavours.

The Jubilee Eucharist was presided over by Abbot Arul Amalraj O.Praem., Abbot of St. Norbert Abbey. The celebration witnessed a large turnout, with “numerous priests and religious” participating in the joyous occasion.

The entire celebration served as a powerful expression of communio — the central motto and defining spirit of the Norbertines — reflecting their deep commitment to shared life and mission. The Norbertine Fathers reaffirmed their vow: “We are committed to our mission and vision of serving the Church and prepared for all good works as taught by our founder, St Norbert.”
