Mysuru Diocese Trains 163 Religious for Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministry

Mysuru, June 8, 2026: As part of its Year of Faith initiatives, the Diocese of Mysuru organised an Orientation and Training Programme for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, bringing together 163 Religious Sisters and Brothers from congregations and religious houses across the diocese on June 6 at the Catholic Centre, Mysuru.

The programme was designed to deepen Eucharistic devotion and strengthen the preparation of religious men and women entrusted with the ministry of distributing Holy Communion, particularly among the sick and elderly.

Presiding over the gathering, Bishop Francis Serrao of Mysore reflected on the dignity, spirituality and responsibility associated with the ministry of distributing Holy Communion. Emphasising the central place of the Holy Eucharist in the life of the Church, he reminded participants that Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are called to be faithful witnesses of Christ’s presence through their prayer, service and personal example.

The Bishop encouraged participants to cultivate a profound love for the Eucharist and to carry out their ministry with reverence, humility and pastoral sensitivity. He stressed the importance of spiritual preparation and a life consistent with the faith they profess.

The training sessions focused on liturgical norms governing the ministry, the proper manner of distributing Holy Communion, pastoral care for the sick and elderly, and the spiritual disposition expected of Extraordinary Ministers. Participants actively engaged in the sessions and described the programme as a valuable opportunity for learning, reflection and renewal.

A significant aspect of the gathering was the participation of religious congregations from different parts of the diocese, highlighting a spirit of communion and collaboration in promoting Eucharistic faith among the faithful. The programme also provided an occasion for participants to renew their commitment to the mission of the Church and their service to the People of God.

In a gesture of solidarity, a special collection was conducted during the programme for the people of Manipur. The Diocese of Mysuru acknowledged the generous response of the participants, describing the contribution as an expression of compassion and support for communities continuing to face hardship and suffering. The diocese also thanked benefactors for their generosity and assured them of its prayers.

The diocese expressed gratitude to the Religious Superiors and congregations whose cooperation made the programme possible. The participation of 163 religious men and women was seen as a strong sign of commitment to ongoing formation and pastoral ministry.

Through its Year of Faith observances, the Diocese of Mysuru continues to promote deeper faith formation, Eucharistic renewal, active participation in the Church’s liturgical life and a stronger commitment to the mission of the Church.
