Late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa Remembered as Champion of Konkani Literature and Goan Identity

Goa, July 19, 2026: On the 73rd anniversary of his birth, the late Fr. Freddy J. Da Costa, a priest of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, was remembered with tributes to his enduring contribution to Roman script Konkani literature, journalism and the preservation of Goa's linguistic and cultural identity.

Remembered as one of the pioneers of modern Roman script Konkani literature, Fr. Da Costa devoted his life to promoting Konkani as the cornerstone of Goan identity. He believed that the state's progress depended not only on economic growth but also on preserving its language, culture and values.

His most significant contribution came in 1983 with the founding of GULAB, a Roman script Konkani monthly that became a leading platform for literary expression. The magazine published articles, poetry, fiction, reflections on faith and commentary on contemporary issues while nurturing generations of emerging and established Konkani writers.

Fr. Da Costa was also recognised for his commitment to value-based journalism. Through his editorials, he addressed issues including social justice, corruption, environmental protection, education, cultural identity and public life. Many of these writings were later compiled in Utth Goenkara (Awake Goan), a collection that encouraged readers to uphold integrity, social responsibility and active citizenship.

As the founding president of the Dalgado Konknni Akademi, he played a key role in promoting Roman script Konkani, encouraging literary research, honouring writers and strengthening the language's literary tradition. He also used tiatr, Goa's popular form of musical theatre, to raise awareness about social and cultural issues. His acclaimed tiatr, Utth Goenkara, echoed the aspirations of those seeking greater recognition for Konkani and affirmed Goa's distinct identity during a formative period in the state's history.

Although Fr. Da Costa passed away in 2004, his influence continues through GULAB, the Dalgado Konknni Akademi, the GULAB Awards instituted in his memory and the many writers and cultural activists inspired by his vision.

Paying tribute to the late priest, Br. Malvino Alfonso, OCD, said Fr. Da Costa awakened the spirit of Goanness not through slogans but through the enduring power of the written word. He said the priest's legacy continues to inspire generations to cherish their language, faith, culture and heritage.
