Kerala: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Pope Francis at Vizhinjam Port Inauguration

Thiruvananthapuram, 2 May, 2025 - Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Pope Francis during his address at the inauguration of the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala’s capital on Friday.

Speaking to a large gathering in Thiruvananthapuram, the Prime Minister reflected on the recent passing of Pope Francis, who died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday, 21 April, at his residence in the Vatican's Casa Santa Marta.

“A few days ago, we all experienced a moment of great sorrow. The world lost Pope Francis. On behalf of India, President Droupadi Murmu attended his funeral. From the land of Kerala, I once again express my condolences,” said Prime Minister Modi.

The Pope, head of the Roman Catholic Church, had been discharged recently from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital after receiving treatment for an infection that developed into double pneumonia. His death marked the end of a papacy that touched millions globally through a message of compassion, humility, and interfaith harmony.

President Murmu led the Indian delegation to the Vatican for the funeral rites held on 25 April. She was accompanied by Union Minister C. George Kurian from Kerala and other dignitaries.

The Prime Minister’s tribute highlighted India’s respect for global religious leaders and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to fostering unity across faiths.
