Karwar Diocese Launches ‘Year of the Poor’, Unveils Housing Initiative on Ash Wednesday

Karwar, February 19, 2026: The Diocese of Karwar on Wednesday inaugurated a diocesan “Year of the Poor” and a new housing project during a solemn Eucharistic celebration at the Our Lady of Assumption Cathedral, Kajubag, linking the spiritual observance of Ash Wednesday with a renewed commitment to social responsibility.

The Mass was presided over by Bishop Duming Dias and concelebrated by priests from across the diocese, with a large gathering of faithful in attendance.

In his homily, the Bishop invited the congregation to rediscover the authentic meaning of Lent through sincere observance of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. He cautioned against practising these disciplines for outward recognition, emphasising that genuine repentance must arise from humility and an inner conversion that renews one’s relationship with God.

Following the final blessing, Bishop Dias formally declared the Year of the Poor by unveiling its official logo. The ceremony also marked the inauguration of a diocesan housing initiative, symbolised by the unveiling of a model house that represents the diocese’s plan to construct homes for underprivileged families in parishes across the region.

Addressing the faithful, the Bishop described the initiative as part of the spiritual and social preparation for the forthcoming diocesan Golden Jubilee Year. He urged the community to support the project not only through prayer but also through active participation and generous contributions, so that the jubilee would be marked by enduring works of compassion.

Declaring the year as a time dedicated to walking with those on the margins, Bishop Dias called on the faithful to practise mercy in tangible ways. He encouraged believers to translate Lenten spirituality into concrete service by uplifting the poor and vulnerable.

The Ash Wednesday observance thus set a clear pastoral direction for the Karwar diocese—one that seeks to unite prayer with social action—offering a purposeful beginning to the Lenten season and reaffirming the Church’s commitment to stand with the poor through faith-inspired initiatives.
