Indian Nun Elected Superior General of Dominican Congregation

Tours, France, July 28, 2024: Sr. Mariamma Paul Ollukaran. O.P (65) has been elected as the Mother General of the Dominican Sisters of Charity of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin. The election took place during the 56th general chapter held at the congregation's mother house in Tours, France on June 27, 2024.


The chapter also elected Sr. Ana Patricia Londoño Flórez (Colombia), Sr. Martha Mendieta Aztatzi (Mexico), Sr. Scolastique Nayabzanga Bei (Burkina Faso), Sr. Anula Irvin Suguna (India), Sr. Beatriz Elena García Santa (Colombia), and Sr. Nilda Leticia Miranda Romero (Chile) as general counselors.


Sr. Mariamma Paul, born on October 2, 1959, in Puthukkad, Thrissur district, Kerala. After completing her graduation in science, she joined the congregation, making her first profession in 1985 and her final profession in 1990.


She served two terms as the provincial superior of the Indian province from 2003 to 2013. Following this, she became a general councilor, holding the position from 2014 to 2024.


Founded by Blessed Marie Poussepin in 1696 in France, the Dominican Sisters of Charity of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin established their presence in India in 1971. Today, approximately 3,046 sisters serve communities in 36 countries across four continents. The congregation is engaged in charitable and educational ministries across 14 dioceses in India.
