Chicalim, Goa, May 12, 2026 : A unique convergence of faith, environmental awareness, and sustainable living marked the conclusion of the Green Guardians Certificate Course in Chicalim, Goa, as participants were urged to carry forward an ecological mission rooted in spirituality and responsibility for creation.
Titled “A Lenten Path of Ecological Conversion,” the programme was organised by the Salesian Sisters in collaboration with the diocesan Commission for Ecology Goa, and endorsed by the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. The initiative highlighted the growing commitment of the Church in Asia to promote ecological consciousness within faith communities.
Conducted in a hybrid format at St. Francis Xavier Church, the course drew 115 participants from across Goa and beyond, including eco-ambassadors from various parishes of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, youth leaders, educators, and environmental advocates.
Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, the programme sought to foster what the Church terms “ecological conversion”—an integration of faith with care for the Earth. Organisers emphasised the formation of a community committed to protecting creation through informed action and spiritual reflection.
The course, coordinated by Fr. Bolmax Pereira, Sr. Melissa D’Souza, and Alisha Pereira, unfolded over six weekly sessions from February 24 to March 31, combining in-person and online participation. Reflective exercises and practical assignments encouraged participants to adopt sustainable lifestyles in their daily lives.
Experts from diverse fields addressed pressing environmental concerns. Dr. Jean D’Cunha spoke on integral ecology and eco-spirituality, drawing connections between environmental degradation and social injustice. Architect Tallulah D’Silva led sessions on sustainable development and responsible consumption, including an eco-construction workshop in collaboration with the Tambdi Matti Foundation. Scientific and legal perspectives were offered by Dr. Alvarinho Luis, who addressed climate change, and Adv. Richard Almeida, who explained environmental laws and citizen engagement.
The valedictory programme, held on May 9, began with a Eucharistic celebration themed “Care for Creation, Our Mission Continues,” presided over by Auxiliary Bishop Simiao Purificacao Fernandes. In his homily, the Bishop underscored that care for creation is a sacred duty, calling on the faithful to sustain their ecological commitment.
The concluding event featured participant testimonies, presentations of environmental projects, and the distribution of certificates. Cyrus Rodrigues received the Eco Green Award for Best Assignment, while Sanjay Shrungare was recognised for being the first to register. Caranzalem Parish was honoured for maximum participation.
A significant announcement during the programme was the designation of St. Anne Church as the “Season of Creation” parish for the year, in connection with the centenary of St. Francis of Assisi, whose life remains a model of harmony with nature.
Fr. Francis Rozario outlined a series of upcoming initiatives linked to the centenary celebrations declared by the Pope for 2026–2027, including parish pilgrimages, ecological campaigns, and formation programmes aimed at deepening environmental stewardship among the faithful.
In his valedictory address, Bishop Fernandes encouraged participants to persevere in their ecological mission with renewed faith and dedication. The programme concluded with a collective Green Pledge, reaffirming a shared commitment to care for creation and to live out the Gospel through responsible stewardship of the Earth.
