Goa Parishes Celebrate Independence Day by Preserving Faith and Cultural Heritage

Goa, August 16, 2026: Catholic parishes across the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman marked India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15 alongside the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, combining religious observance with celebrations of Goan culture, community and heritage.

Several parishes organised evening programmes under different names, including Thunder, Freedom, Somudayancho Mellavo, Pausallo, Rongit Pausallo, Khellancho Utsov, Pavsacho Utsov, Ekvottachi Sanz, Sonskrutik Sanz Somudayanchi Sanz, Somudai Mela and Amchem Daiz. Despite their different names, the programmes focused on fostering fellowship, unity and a sense of community.

The celebrations were organised by parish youth groups, Parish Pastoral Councils, catechists and parish associations, drawing participation from children, young people, adults and senior citizens.

Small Christian Communities and parish wards often presented traditional parades highlighting Goa’s cultural heritage and traditional occupations. Traditional games, local sweets and Goan dishes formed an important part of the programmes, helping younger generations remain connected with their cultural traditions.

Auxiliary Bishop of Goa and Daman Simião Fernandes told Catholic Connect that the celebrations had both spiritual and communal significance.

He said the Blessed Virgin Mary “has been a model for all of us to be united, live in a community and thus spread the ray of hope to those around us.”

The bishop welcomed parish initiatives to preserve traditional games, food and other elements of Goan heritage. He said such gatherings give people an opportunity to meet, strengthen relationships and experience the parish as a living community.

He expressed hope that the celebrations would continue to promote “unity, brotherhood and peace.”

Clara Britto, a parishioner of Mount Carmel Chapel, Curtorim, who took part in the Pausallo programme, said the event strengthened family bonds despite heavy rain.

“The vibe was all about family bonding, and the dishes were made with so much love. It was a perfect blend of traditional, fun and unity,” she said.

At St Thomas Church, Aldona, Fr Agnelo Simoes, Assistant to the Parish Priest, said the Somudayanchea Ekvottachi Sanz was organised to bring Aldonkars together while celebrating Goan traditions.

The parish celebrations demonstrated how religious communities in Goa are combining faith, cultural traditions and community participation to preserve local heritage and strengthen relationships between generations.
