Lima, Peru, May 2, 2025: In 2019, Pope Francis addressed a letter to young economists and entrepreneurs around the world, urging them to help build “a different kind of economy: one that brings life, not death; one that is inclusive, not exclusive; humane, not dehumanising; one that cares for the environment and does not despoil it.” This visionary message laid the foundation for The Economy of Francesco (EoF)—a global network of young professionals from over 100 countries, united by the mission to give “a soul to the economy of tomorrow”.
Among its founding members is Marcia King, a sustainability professional from Peru. Speaking to Vatican News, King said the Pope’s passing left her with both “intense sadness” and “deep gratitude” for his ministry—especially his call to “care for the neediest and to take care of our common home”. She recalled meeting Pope Francis at an EoF event in September 2024, where he shared three messages that deeply moved her: “be witnesses”, “do not be afraid”, and “hope without tiring”.
King noted that the late pontiff would be “deeply missed” at EoF but that “his legacy would continue to live on in the hearts of all its members”. “I will always remember”, she said, “his invitation to dream big and let ourselves be surprised by God.”
Despite the physical distance between Rome and Lima, King shared that Pope Francis’ papacy always felt close to her. She recalled his visit to Peru in 2018, during which he called for greater respect for indigenous peoples, stronger environmental protections, and a renewed fight against corruption. “His reference to Peru as ensantada (meaning ‘full of saints) left a lasting message of hope to Catholics, as well as non-Catholics in the country,” she said.
Pope Francis’ legacy, King emphasised, remains deeply rooted in the hearts of those who continue to champion his vision for a more just, inclusive, and compassionate world—both economically and spiritually.
