First Salesian Priest from Arunachal Pradesh Ordained

December 21, Arunachal Pradesh: Father Wangbo George Wangsu, the first Salesian priest from Arunachal Pradesh, was ordained at St. Joseph Parish Mintong on December 17 by Bishop George Palliparambil of Miao. The ceremony, attended by Auxiliary Bishop Denis Panipitchai SDB, Salesians, clergy, religious sisters and faithful from across the region, marked a historic milestone for the Catholic Church and the Salesian Congregation. Father Wangsu is the first Salesian priest from the Wancho Tribe and his ordination holds profound significance for the Salesian Congregation and Arunachal Pradesh.

The ordination began with a traditional welcome, featuring vibrant dances and cheers from the local Wancho community. During his homily, Bishop Palliparambil reflected on the ordination motto, "At thy Word…" (Luke 5:5), urging Father Wangsu to embrace his call to be "another Christ" through a life of service and sacrifice. The bishop underscored the priesthood's essence as a journey of dedication and selflessness, aligned with Christ's ministry.

At the cultural programme following the ordination, Bishop Palliparambil paid tribute to the pioneers who laid the foundation for Catholicism in Arunachal Pradesh, often amidst persecution. Their resilience, he noted, has borne fruit in today’s thriving Catholic community.

Father Deli David, Vice Provincial of Dimapur, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Father Wangsu’s parents for offering their son to the Church. He reminded Father Wangsu of the sacred responsibility of priesthood, quoting Mama Margaret's words to Don Bosco: "You are now a priest and you will celebrate Mass. From now on, think only of the salvation of souls." Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis, he urged Father Wangsu to be a priest "fully human, capable of healthy relationships, and mature in confronting the challenges of ministry."

The ordination was not only a religious milestone but also a cultural celebration, showcasing the rich traditions of the Wancho Tribe. The colourful attire, traditional dances, and jubilant atmosphere amplified the significance of this historic occasion.
