Feast of St. Dominic: 5 Simple Ways to Walk in His Footsteps

August 8, 2025: St. Dominic (1170–1221), founder of the Order of Preachers, lived a life that still challenges Catholics today. His humility in leadership, relentless pursuit of truth, and deep compassion for souls offer a roadmap for authentic Christian living.

1. Let Truth Be Your Burning Desire

St. Dominic’s life was marked by a passion for God’s truth, which he studied, lived, and preached tirelessly. He immersed himself in Scripture and the teachings of the Church, not to win debates, but to bring souls to Christ. His commitment reminds us that truth is not an opinion to defend, but a Person to encounter in Jesus Christ. In a world that often encourages studies only for professional advancement, how much do we take interest in studying the Church’s teachings and the Bible—not for worldly gain, but to nourish our souls and serve others?

Do I approach the faith as a set of arguments, or as an invitation to meet Christ?

How often do I study God’s Word with the intention to live it?

2. Lead with Humility, Not Control

Though St. Dominic founded and led a new religious order, he remained deeply humble. He did not seek to dominate but to serve, listening to his brothers and encouraging them to flourish in their gifts. His leadership showed that authority is a form of service, not self-exaltation.

In the areas where I lead, do I use my position to lift others up?

How do I respond when my ideas are not the ones followed?

3. Let Prayer Be Your Anchor

St. Dominic never treated prayer as optional—he never let tiredness, busyness, or distractions replace time with God. His preaching flowed from long hours of prayer, often spending the night interceding for souls. In today’s fast-paced world, his example challenges us to prioritise prayer as the source of strength for our work, service, and witness.

Do I truly believe my ministry or work needs prayer to bear fruit?

How can I create more space for heartfelt prayer in my daily life?

4. Defend with Love, not Pride

St. Dominic was unwavering in preaching the truth of the Gospel, yet he did so with kindness. He recognised that truth without love can wound, and love without truth can mislead. In an age of polarised debates—both online and in person—his balance is vital. St. Dominic reminds us to stand for what is right, but with respect, patience, and genuine concern for the other person’s dignity.

Do I approach those who disagree with me with patience or with pride?

When was the last time I prayed specifically for someone who opposes my beliefs?

5. Live Simply even in a World of Excess

Dominic embraced poverty, not as deprivation, but as freedom to serve. Owning little allowed him to move freely, respond quickly to needs, and rely fully on God’s providence. His example challenges us to strip away excess so that Christ, not comfort, is at the centre of our lives.

What possessions or habits might be dimming my witness to Christ?

How might simplicity open more room for God’s work in my life?
