Mawlai, Shillong, 8 June, 2025 – Close to 10,000 faithful gathered at the Sacred Heart Shrine in Mawlai on Sunday for the Annual Pilgrimage in Honour of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a cherished spiritual tradition hosted by the Sacred Heart Theological College. The deeply prayerful day witnessed pilgrims from across the Archdiocese of Shillong and neighbouring dioceses of Nongstoin and Jowai, affirming it as a regional celebration of faith.
The solemn Eucharistic Celebration was presided over by Bernard Laloo, D.D., Auxiliary Bishop of Shillong. In his homily, he urged pilgrims to remain rooted in the love of Christ and to be credible witnesses of hope and mercy in today’s challenging world.
Throughout the day, the shrine grounds resonated with hymns, silent adoration, and heartfelt prayers, as pilgrims renewed their devotion to the Sacred Heart — seen as a source of divine grace and consolation. A key highlight of the day was the Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction Service held in the afternoon, animated by the group United for Christ. Fr. Varickasseril Jose, SDB, delivered a compelling reflection on the theme “Pilgrims of Hope”, inviting the assembly to draw strength from Christ’s heart amidst life's uncertainties.
The Benediction, led by Bishop Laloo, brought the sacred moments to a solemn close. Various religious houses and institutions actively participated in animating the adoration, enriching the experience with hymns, reflections, and silent prayer, embodying the Church’s unity in diversity.
The liturgical celebrations were powerfully enhanced by the Choral Evangelists, whose uplifting music added depth and reverence, helping the faithful enter more fully into the mystery of the Sacred Heart.
The Fathers and Brothers of Sacred Heart Theological College spared no effort in the meticulous planning and organisation of the pilgrimage. Their dedication ensured a seamless programme and a spiritually enriching atmosphere throughout.
This year’s pilgrimage stood as a living testimony to the enduring faith of the people. It rekindled a burning love for Christ in the hearts of many and strengthened the call to journey as hopeful disciples in a world thirsting for healing and peace.
