Coimbatore, Feb. 14, 2026 — An evening of astronomical observation and reflection at Good Shepherd Seminary, Coimbatore brought together seminarians, scientists and lay participants to explore the relationship between scientific inquiry and spiritual insight. The Sky Watch, organised in collaboration with Kovai Astro Club, offered a unique formative experience that combined education, contemplation and community engagement.
The programme began with an introductory session on astronomy that guided participants through the structure and vastness of the universe. The orientation was followed by telescope-based observations, allowing attendees to view planets, stars and other celestial phenomena. The experience prompted reflection on the order and beauty of creation, with organisers emphasising that scientific exploration can deepen rather than diminish spiritual awareness.
For seminarians, the event formed part of an integral approach to priestly formation that values intellectual curiosity alongside spiritual growth. Faculty members noted that engagement with scientific knowledge encourages a balanced understanding of faith and reason, fostering openness to dialogue with contemporary culture while nurturing contemplative awareness.
The gathering also welcomed members of the wider community, strengthening ties between the seminary and lay faithful through shared learning and wonder. Participants described the experience as both educational and reflective, highlighting how observation of the night sky inspired a renewed appreciation for creation.
Expressing gratitude at the close of the programme, Fr. Antony Raj acknowledged the contribution of the Kovai Astro Club team, including Advisor Ramesh, Secretary Pradeep, Vice President Rosamma and Treasurer Pugalendi, for their guidance and technical support. He expressed hope that similar initiatives would continue to inspire deeper reflection on the relationship between scientific discovery and faith.
The Sky Watch formed part of the seminary’s broader commitment to holistic formation, presenting the study of the cosmos as an invitation to wonder, inquiry and reverence for creation.
