GUAYAQUIL, October 19, 2026: An Ecuadorian Redemptorist priest, Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari, died on October 17 after a large crucifix mounted behind the altar fell on him while he was celebrating Mass. The incident was captured in a livestream that has since circulated widely on social media.
Fr. Sanchez Molinari was addressing the congregation at the altar when the crucifix suddenly detached from the wall and fell on him, obscuring him from view. The fallen structure was subsequently seen across the altar area.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed his death in a social media statement on October 18. He served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the archdiocese’s Central Vicariate.
“We announce that our beloved Fr. Patricio Alfredo Sanchez Molinari, CSsR., who served as parish priest of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in the Central Vicariate, has departed for the Father's House to rejoice in His presence and glory,” the statement said.
The archdiocese concluded its message with a prayer for the deceased priest, asking God to grant him eternal rest and perpetual light.
