Ernakulam, May 6, 2026: In a concerted effort to promote sustainable growth and equitable development in Kerala’s fisheries sector, the Coastal Area Development Agency for Liberation (CADAL), an initiative of the Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC), has announced a one-day workshop focusing on coastal and inland fisheries development.
The programme, organised in collaboration with the Ernakulam Social Service Society (ESSS), seeks to examine the pressing challenges faced by fishing communities while exploring practical and scientific approaches to strengthen the sector. The initiative reflects the Church’s continued commitment to the welfare and empowerment of coastal populations, many of whom depend on fisheries for their livelihood.
Scheduled to be held on May 9 at the ESSS Auditorium on Providence Road, Ernakulam, the workshop will bring together policymakers, development practitioners, and Church leaders. Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly, Bishop Antony Valunkal, will inaugurate the event, while Kochi Corporation Mayor Adv. V.K. Minimol will attend as chief guest.
Organisers said the workshop aims not only to deepen scientific and practical understanding of fisheries development but also to highlight the role of local self-government institutions in fostering sustainable progress. Discussions will centre on key developmental concerns, including resource management, livelihood security, and the integration of inland fisheries into broader development frameworks.
Prominent speakers include Fr. Jiju Arakkathara, General Secretary of KRLCC, and Joseph Jude, General Secretary of ‘Kadal’, who will offer insights into community engagement and policy advocacy. Technical sessions will be led by experts such as Ms. Josephine from the State Planning Board, Ignatius Monro B., Managing Director of the Aquaculture Kerala Development Agency (ADAK), CADAL Vice Chairman Placide Gregory, and ESSS Director Fr. Celestine Puthanpurackal.
The organisers expressed hope that the deliberations would generate actionable strategies and strengthen collaboration between government agencies, Church bodies, and local communities, contributing meaningfully to the sustainable development of Kerala’s coastal and inland fisheries sectors.
