Christian Family Prayer Service Disrupted in Odisha Village; Police Intervene

Jaleswar, Odisha, June 17, 2026: A family prayer service held in Banida village near Nampo, approximately 18 kilometres from Jaleswar, was disrupted on June 15 following objections raised by members of a BJP–Bajrang Dal group, leading to police intervention.

According to local sources, the gathering had been organised by a Christian family to mark the death anniversary of the family matriarch. The prayer service was attended by Christians from neighbouring villages and was conducted in a private residence.

The service was led by Sanyasi Marandi, a resident of Nampo who is known for assisting local Christian communities in organising prayer meetings and other religious activities. Marandi, accompanied by two others, had travelled to Banida to conduct the prayers.

During the service, members of a BJP–Bajrang Dal group reportedly objected to the gathering, resulting in a confrontation between the two sides. Local police arrived at the scene and escorted representatives from both groups to the police station in an effort to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating.

Following the incident, several Christians from Nampo reached the police station to express their concern and support those involved in the prayer gathering.

Sources stated that members of the BJP–Bajrang Dal group subsequently warned residents of Nampo against visiting Banida to conduct or participate in Christian prayer services. No arrests were reported, and police continue to monitor the situation.

The incident has raised concerns among local Christians regarding the freedom to conduct religious gatherings and observances in the area.
