Kanker, Chhattisgarh, May 21, 2026: Christian families in the Antagarh region of Kanker district have alleged that they are being denied access to essential water sources and livelihoods because of their religious beliefs, according to an appeal issued by the Progressive Christian Alliance.
The organisation claimed that several Christian families from villages including Madappa, Bhainsgaon and Burkhapara have faced restrictions on using rivers, ponds, taps and hand pumps for several weeks. The families alleged that the denial of access was intended to pressure them into abandoning Christianity and participating in so-called “Ghar Wapsi” programmes.
Representatives of Jila Masih Astha Samaj said they had submitted written complaints to the Superintendent of Police and District Collector on 28 and 30 April, while also making oral requests for intervention earlier in April. They stated that despite these efforts, many families continue to experience hardship.
According to the appeal, approximately 26 families have reportedly been affected by restrictions on water access. The organisation further alleged that Christian families were also facing economic and social challenges, including denial of employment opportunities under MGNREGA, exclusion from local work, restrictions on access to forest produce, and threats related to agriculture and livelihood activities.
During a visit to the area on 16 May by community representatives, more than 60 individuals from 32 villages reportedly gathered to discuss the issue. The delegation claimed that 41 families had allegedly been denied MGNREGA work, while 115 families were prevented from participating in tendu leaf procurement activities. It also alleged that firewood belonging to four families had been taken away forcibly.
The Progressive Christian Alliance stated that the situation raised concerns over constitutional protections, including equality before law, freedom from discrimination, protection of life and dignity, and freedom of religion under Articles 14, 15, 21 and 25 of the Constitution of India.
The organisation urged government authorities, human rights groups, civil society organisations and legal institutions to intervene and ensure access to water, livelihood opportunities and legal protection for the affected families.
The allegations have been made by the organisation, and an official response from the district administration was not immediately available.
