Catholic Hospital in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, Vandalised Following Woman’s Death Post Treatment

Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, June 18, 2025: Chaos erupted at St. Richard Pampuri Hospital, Khandwa, on Tuesday evening after the family of a deceased woman vandalised the institution, accusing hospital staff of medical negligence. The deceased, identified as Jyoti, had been admitted to the Catholic-run, not-for-profit hospital on May 21 for kidney-related issues. As her condition worsened, doctors referred her to a hospital in Indore for advanced treatment. She passed away there on June 16.

Enraged by her death, Jyoti’s family returned to Khandwa the following day and allegedly stormed the hospital premises. They reportedly damaged property and blamed the doctors at the hospital for her demise.

As tensions escalated, police teams from three stations, along with Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Bajrang Singh Bahadur and City Superintendent of Police (CSP) Abhinav Barange, were deployed to the scene to restore order.

SDM Bahadur confirmed that Jyoti had been admitted and treated at Pampuri Hospital before being referred to Indore. “Her family alleges that she initially received incorrect treatment. After she passed away in Indore, they returned to Khandwa and vandalised the hospital,” he said.

CSP Barange stated that a formal inquiry into Jyoti’s death is underway and that a report from the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) is awaited. “Further action will be taken based on the investigation findings. If the hospital files a complaint about the vandalism, legal proceedings will follow in that matter as well,” he stated.

The Hospitaller Order of St. John of God, which operates St. Richard Pampuri Hospital, has not yet released an official statement. The case remains under investigation.
