Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão Releases ‘Churches of Goa’ Volume Celebrating State’s Christian Heritage

Panaji, April 1, 2026: In a celebration of Goa’s rich ecclesial and cultural legacy, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão formally released the first volume of the special edition book Churches of Goa at the Arch Bishop’s House in Panaji on Wednesday.

Published by The Goan newspaper, the volume offers concise historical narratives of 55 churches across the state, presenting a tapestry of faith that has shaped Goa’s identity for centuries.

The release ceremony was attended by Bishop Simião Purificação Fernandes, Fr. Joaquim Loiola Pereira, Fr. Apolinario Cardozo, and Joel Afonso, among others.

In his address, Cardinal Ferrão underscored the enduring spiritual significance of Goa’s churches, describing them as living witnesses to a vibrant Christian heritage. He expressed hope that such initiatives would inspire the faithful, not only in India but across Asia, to document and preserve the histories of their local churches.

“These sacred spaces,” he noted, “continue to serve as centres of worship, prayer, service, and community life, embodying the faith of generations.”

Commending the publication, the Cardinal termed it both timely and valuable, observing that it brings together history, architecture, and conservation. He emphasized that the work captures the spiritual and cultural patrimony that remains integral to Goa’s identity.

Editor Joel Afonso described the book as a “journey through heritage and faith,” highlighting the central role churches have played in shaping Goan society. He pointed out that many of these structures trace their origins to the 16th and 17th centuries, when missionary zeal and local collaboration led to the establishment of places of worship even in remote regions.

“Despite renovations over time, these churches continue to bear the imprint of a living faith,” Afonso said, reflecting on their enduring relevance.

Authored by Fr. Apolinario Cardozo SJ, the volume delves into the origins, historical evolution, architectural features, and cultural importance of the churches, while also addressing ongoing conservation efforts and associated chapels.

Priced at Rs. 400, the book will be available online and at leading bookstores across Goa. Additional volumes, covering more churches, are expected to follow, further chronicling the state’s remarkable Christian heritage.
