Cardinal Ferrão Calls for Dialogue and Communal Harmony in Diwali Message

GOA, November 7, 2026: Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão has extended Diwali greetings to the Hindu community, urging people to promote interreligious dialogue, mutual respect and communal harmony.

In a message issued on behalf of the Catholic community of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, Cardinal Ferrão, along with Auxiliary Bishop Simiao Fernandes, conveyed their greetings to Hindu brothers and sisters on the occasion of the festival.

Describing Diwali as a celebration of the triumph of light over darkness and truth over untruth, the Cardinal said the lighting of traditional lamps should inspire people to cultivate love and compassion in their hearts.

Referring to the message of the Vatican Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue, he stressed that peace requires sustained efforts through dialogue and mutual understanding.

"True peace is built through authentic dialogue, mutual respect and everyday encounters," he said.

Highlighting Goa's tradition of communal harmony, Cardinal Ferrão described the state as a beacon of peaceful coexistence and called on people to strengthen bonds of fraternity, overcome prejudice and extend care and solidarity to one another.

He expressed hope that Diwali would bring lasting peace, good health and happiness to families and enlighten people's hearts.
