August 15, 2025: Biju Varghese, Executive Vice President at eMudhra, shared his remarkable journey with Catholic Connect, revealing a life defined by unwavering faith, resilience, and visionary leadership.
Born into a humble middle-class family in Alappuzha, Kerala, Biju’s upbringing was steeped in faith and strong family values. “My father was a very staunch believer, and we attended church every Sunday,” he fondly recalled. Both his parents were government servants who embodied simplicity and dedication. This nurturing environment laid the foundation for a life grounded in purpose and spirituality.
Education Meets Spiritual Growth
Biju pursued his education with equal dedication, earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering, also completed his Masters in Technology from the University of Kerala and later refining his leadership acumen through the Senior Management Programme at IIM Calcutta.
His spiritual journey blossomed during his engineering days, when he dedicated nearly three years to serving as a catechism teacher, conducting Vacation Bible Studies for children at a time when his parish was quiet. “I was enthusiastic about campaigning for the Bible school,” he reflected. “We gathered over 100 students and raised all the funds ourselves.” He also lent his voice to the church choir and was an active member of Jesus Youth, regularly attending prayer groups and retreats. “These experiences truly helped mould my life,” he acknowledged.
A Career Rooted in Service and Innovation
Although trained in mechanical engineering, Biju’s professional path shifted when he joined the Reserve Bank of India’s IT department in Hyderabad, where he served for six years. “Being part of creating a secure infrastructure for financial transactions was a challenging yet profoundly rewarding experience,” he shared.
Later, he moved to Bengaluru, contributing to the Aditya Birla Group before embracing the opportunity to join eMudhra in its nascent stage. There, Biju was instrumental in developing pioneering products that became central to the company’s growth. “It is truly by God’s grace that I was able to contribute to many initiatives that led to the company’s success. Today, it is a ₹500 crore company,” he said, humble yet joyful.
Perseverance, Patience, and Providence
He speaks deeply of the core values of patience and perseverance—values instilled in him from childhood that he strives to impart to others. “The company where I first started—then just a small start-up—has now grown into a publicly listed firm on the stock exchange. To be part of this incredible journey, and to be rewarded with ESOPs by the chairman himself, is nothing short of God’s providence,” he reflects.
Strength in Life’s Hardest Moments
Biju’s personal life, too, has been marked by profound trials and triumphs. “My wife succumbed to a brain tumour in 2016, and God was my strength,” he shares candidly. “Looking back, I see how God was with me through every situation, supported by so many people around me.”
His faith has been a steadfast source of positivity: “Throughout my life, my faith has kept me hopeful, and I have never fallen into depression.”
Now married to Shalet, Biju believes this new chapter is divinely orchestrated. “It was my daughter who searched on a matrimony site and instrumental in finding a suitable spouse for me,” he says with a smile.
Life’s Rhythm: Embracing the Highs and Lows
With a profound perspective on life’s inevitable fluctuations, he reflects, “Life is like an electrocardiogram—it goes up and down constantly, and that is perfectly normal. Only if it stays still on a flat line does it become a problem. We must keep the momentum going.”
Values That Outlast Success
Advising youngsters embarking on their careers, Biju spoke candidly: “Opportunities are plenty, and knowledge is available everywhere nowadays, but it is important to develop qualities that mould you into a good human being.” He added, “Being a Catholic, the value systems that were taught to me in my childhood—like trusting in God and loving one another—have helped me navigate through many challenging situations in my career.”
From his early days teaching catechism to leading transformative digital projects across the Asia Pacific region, Biju Varghese’s life is a powerful testament to how enduring faith, resilience, and dedication can illuminate a path of purpose, impact, and grace.
