Amrat Talitha Kum Bihar Strengthens Anti-Trafficking Network at Regional Assembly

Patna, April 28, 2026: The Bihar Region of Amrat Talitha Kum India held its Regional Assembly at Navajyothi Niketan, Patna, on April 23, bringing together 34 members from six dioceses under the theme, “Capacity Building and Strengthening the Network.”

The gathering focused on deepening collaboration in the Church's mission to combat human trafficking, promote safe migration, and uphold human dignity. Participants from Patna Archdiocese, Buxar, Bethia, Bhagalpur, Muzaffarpur and Purnea, representing various congregations, engaged in reflection, training, and strategic planning.

The assembly began with a prayer led by Bhavya and her team, followed by a scripture reading from the Gospel of Luke (4:18–19), centred on liberation and healing, echoing the mission of Talitha Kum.

Sr. Stella HC coordinated the sessions, ensuring a structured flow of the programme. Fr. Antony Samy, Director of Navajyothi Niketan, addressed the participants, outlining the facilities and services of the centre and underscoring the importance of institutional support in social and pastoral initiatives.

Sr. Ancy CJ, Regional Coordinator of the Bihar Region, outlined the objectives and direction of the assembly, highlighting the need for stronger collaboration and renewed commitment within the network.

Sr. Prema SCC, Vice President of National Amrat Talitha Kum, called on members to be witnesses of justice and truth, balancing “passion for Christ and compassion for people.” She described human trafficking as “one of the gravest crimes of the modern age” and urged greater unity among religious congregations and Church institutions.

Sr. Valsa Mattathilani SCSC, Provincial Superior of Holy Cross Province, Patna, strongly urged collective action against trafficking, declaring, “No one is for sale,” and emphasising the responsibility of both Church and society to stand with the vulnerable.

Key sessions addressed safeguarding policies, the POCSO Act, human trafficking, and the psycho-pastoral care of migrants. Sr. Advocate Cynthia CJ provided practical legal guidance, while Dr. Prakash highlighted the socio-economic factors contributing to trafficking in Bihar.

The assembly also reviewed initiatives undertaken across the region, including awareness programmes in villages, schools and parishes, skill development and training efforts, formation of vigilance committees, rescue operations, and the observance of Migrants Day.

The initiative continues to prioritise safe migration through proper documentation and monitoring of migrant families, alongside building grassroots vigilance groups and strengthening collaboration with NGOs. It also focuses on sensitising Bishops and Church leaders to ensure a coordinated institutional response.

Participants developed a one-year action plan for their dioceses, focusing on awareness campaigns, safe migration, vigilance groups, networking, and advocacy within the Church.

The assembly concluded with renewed commitment to protecting the vulnerable and strengthening the regional network in the fight against human trafficking and exploitation.
