AICU Demands Judicial Probe into Police Action Against Protesters

NEW DELHI, October 13, 2026: The All India Catholic Union (AICU) has condemned reported police action against youth protesters demonstrating over the conduct of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, demanding the release of detainees and an independent judicial inquiry into the treatment of women, journalists and lawyers.

In a statement, AICU criticised prohibitory orders, mass detentions and restrictions on peaceful demonstrations, warning that such measures undermine constitutional rights to assembly and free expression.

Citing media reports, the Union said hundreds of protesters and activists had been detained. It also raised concerns over the reported detention of journalists covering the demonstrations, alleged mistreatment of women protesters and the detention of opposition leaders, MPs and lawyers.

AICU questioned the restrictions on demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, describing the reported withdrawal of its designated protest status as a setback for peaceful dissent. It also referred to opposition concerns about the functioning of the Election Commission and the conduct of the Chief Election Commissioner.

Drawing on Catholic social teaching, the Union stressed that human dignity, the common good and democratic freedoms must be protected.

AICU called for the immediate release of detainees, a judicial inquiry into alleged police excesses, restoration of Jantar Mantar as a protest site and safeguards for press freedom. It also urged the government, opposition and civil society to engage in dialogue to restore public trust in constitutional institutions.

The Union reaffirmed its support for citizens seeking justice peacefully and appealed to Catholics and people of goodwill to uphold truth, justice and constitutional governance.
